prince-artistPrince continues to insist upon being a viable, creative and successful musician despite not having a record label. How dare he. Joking aside, Prince has always had a singular approach to his art, ever since he said that he played all 27 instruments on his first album back in 1978.

He plans to release three albums in 2009 through an as-yet unlaunched website and a distribution deal directly between himself and a major retailer. Ann Powers blogged that during her informal interview, Prince several times repeated the phrase, “The gatekeepers have to change.” He’s right. Just ask Dolly Parton and her Dolly Records label. Or Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails. And that’s just three of the musical geniuses who decided they didn’t need a label to have a career. (Thanks to Prince for the lyrics/title.)
