Wallets fail to open for SlotMusic

sandisk-microsdhcWell, we got through the holiday season without hearing even a whimper about SlotMusic. SlotMusic puts licensed, high quality, “MP3-based music tracks” on microSD cards, with the idea that they could then be played on mobile phones and other gizmos that people already owned.

Om Malik at GigaOm predicted they would fail, citing several very good reasons including the declining interest in physical media. I think SlotMusic falls into the “why not” category of ideas worth trying – if nothing else, parent company SanDisk would be educating people that mobile phones do things you don’t have to pay a carrier for, and that in turn could increase sales of microSD cards. But I agree they won’t be a success in their own right.
