Spot the promising music player

spotifyTorrent Freak is offering a few invitations to the beta of Spotify, a new music service that so far is available only in the UK, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Spain and France. It has deals in place with the major labels and other entities. That’s good, obviously, but what’s intriguing is that Spotify blends streaming with peer-to-peer technology. I can’t test it myself, being outside the service area, but Torrent Freak’s Ernesto claims this combination allows users to hear their music instantly, with no buffering and at a quality comparable to 160kbps MP3s. He also tested the footprint and found Spotify uses just 12k of memory – compare that to iTunes’ 45-50MB – which he attributes to software engineer Ludvig Strigeus, creator of uTorrent.

Spotify users can create and share playlists, discover via “similar artists” and “artist radio,” and integrate scrobbling with a Greasemonkey script for Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari.
